Every year, the NGO 'KILIMANJARO INITIATIVE' (KI) brings together a diverse group of people from around the world to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Their goal: to raise awareness about complex issues young people face in African slums and to highlight how we can unite in creating healthier, safer and cleaner communities. The annual ascent is at the center of KI’S activities. Conquering the mountain provides a ready metaphor for overcoming life’s challenges and was the genesis of the initiative itself. Other KI projects have included refurbishing a soccer pitch that was a crime haven, establishing security patrols, developing plans for micro-finance facilities and leading a “Youth Peace” rally in the wake of the Kenyan elections in December 2007.

To raise visibility on the initiative, KI has organized a photo exhibition entitled “WALKING AS ONE – FROM THE SLUMS OF NAIROBI TO THE SUMMIT OF AFRICA”.

Overall, the exhibition goes some way in highlighting the positive use of sport in communities, drawing an unlikely but effective comparison between Kibera Slum, in Nairobi, and Mount Kilimanjaro. The photographs and their captions encourage people to think beyond the boundaries of communities and how the world is interlinked.

The photograph exhibition was initially on display at the ‘Palais des Nations’ in Geneva, Switzerland, from 7 to 25 May 2009, and will now go on tour to different venues around the world.
