About the Book
Trailing the Brambles is a photographic travelogue of journeys through England and Scotland. The itinerary follows the fictional Bramble family in Toby Smollett's comic novel, Humphry Clinker (1771) as they explored Bath, London, York, Scarborough, and on into Scotland and the Highlands. Many of the 175 pictures reveal scenes just as the Brambles would have seen them. The accompanying travel letters comment on the novel, the history, the landscapes, gardens, castles, architecture, geology, museums, adventures, royalty. . . . In all, the book is a guided tour of 18th century Britain--a fine time for a visit.
