Since the day an earthquake hit the city of L'Aquila, in central Italy, the area has been shut. No living, social or commercial activity has been permitted within the so-called "red zone", a large area which embraces most of the historical centre.
Outside, army vehicles halt anyone trying to enter. Inside, it is a ghost town inhabited by its own phantoms.
The feeling of a lifeless place is dreadfully intense.
Hundreds of people died in the quake, many thousands had to leave their apartments for good.
This reportage jumps over the barriers and take the reader in the heart of the earthquake.
It walks the streets, enters the halls, visits the homes to take a look into the rooms. Where time froze.
It gives back to the owners the places they have been bereaved. It gives back to the places the life they lack.

Born in Rome, Italy in 1970, Valerio Berdini is now resident in Cambridge, UK.
Photographing from a very young age, he has developed a personal language that merges a traditional aesthetic, influenced by the masters of photojournalism, with an incessant attention to the evolution of contemporary society.
His photographic projects bring his cameras around the world where a transformation is in place. Valerio always seeks for eye contact. Either with singles, small groups or huge masses, hearing stories from people is the driving force to put together his own stories.
As a live music photographer he is recognized within the International live music scene with an archive of hundreds of bands shot and has been published on numerous music related publications.
Valerio work has been published in national and international papers and magazines, including Travel Photography, L’Actualité, Grazia, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent.

see my book beautifl italy -i am very well aware that italy has the worst geology of all the eu member sates - volcanoes, earthquakes - i thought berlusconi was holding some major meeting in this zone - g20 or some thing - this is a major tragedy and the only solution is to quit - i am sorry this is unliveable and you have to leave this place even if it is very painful and start again some place else - your photos are outstanding - send them to the british royal photographic society and get a diploma
