About the Book
Flowers, trees, and even people seem perfect when they’re young — fresh and unravaged by time. Though in their youthful perfection, they are all so similar. They lack the defining distinctions that come with age and maturity.
It is always heartwarming to receive a bouquet of freshly–cut flowers. But as the flowers start wilting, and in most households would have been discarded, I actually like them even more. I am enchanted with the grace and beauty of aging flowers; their elegant decay. I am drawn to the diversity and nobility of their sculpture-like form. Those flowers that started off so fresh, standing up straight, turn into unique elaborate forms – full of character, and extraordinary grace.
Aging Gracefully, honors all creations of nature that mature with elegance and beauty. I want to show how aging can be viewed differently, with love and esteem.
I look for gestures of petals and leaves, the way they curl, shrivel, and droop: how the daisies dance; how the tulips pray; how the proud roses soften.
My photographs celebrate aging as Victor Hugo once wrote: “When grace is joined with wrinkles, it is adorable. There is an unspeakable dawn in happy old age. “
