The urbanization process of Pekin, initiated long before the 2008 Olympic Games, is pursuing its destruction work.
Hutong, a maze of alleys some of which date back to the 13th century, serve the purpose of going around Siheyuan, traditional four-sided enclosed courtyard homes hidden behing their grey walls and Chinese-red doors.
Sad and resigned, the people who live in these still standing places are witnessing their systematic demolition while waiting for the moment when the fatal Chai ideogram, painted in red on the wall of their own house, will proclaim their imminent evacuation…
The first section of this photo book is dedicated to Hutong still standing. The government will rehabilitate some of these neighbourhoods and thus preserve a small part of Pekin’s memory.
The second section is, unfortunately, a reflexion of what is still happening today :
the "fade out"...

One of the reasons of the existence of photography is to save what is going to disappear (Wim Wenders).
In this sense, the keen attentive eye of my dear friend Jean-Luc Rollier makes this book of extreme interest.
I would say... priceless.
