We called the theme of the exhibition “ROOTED”. It was an open concept that references --- just about everything: our lives, our work, the purpose of our organization, as well as personal and social concerns. The word “rooted” raises important questions that we all should ask ourselves. Where are we situated? Or not. And if not, why? How can we illustrate the parameters, the dichotomy between nurturing environments where we want to be and those that are not? How can we provide such an environment? How can we resist alienation and find affiliation, collaboration, dialog and support from our community? In the end, can the knowledge we glean from asking those questions turn into pro-active positions, decisions, and strategies?
Many of the artists explored the various meanings of the term in visual terms. This books shows the results and discusses some of the basic meanings. Words offer another perspective.
CULTUREINSIDE.com is a free online social network for the visual art community and encompasses both artists and art amateurs. It is a European initiative coming from Luxembourg. We connected Europe to New York mid 2008, opening an office and expert staff connected to academic and commercial art world in New York. We want to create opportunities for dialog of our European artists with the world-at-large. CULTUREINSIDE gives real visibility to artist. To do so CULTUREINSIDE develops an artist-driven approach. CI is a quality-oriented network in the interest of artists. The special requirements of the visual arts have not been addressed until now. Artists need several levels of communication and exhibition interface to properly show their work and connect with other artists. This worldwide group is international in spirit and has a strong impetus to connect. CULTUREINSIDE simply gives real visibility to artists online, in virtual and brick & mortar exhibitions and via documentation.
