MART Gallery and FBi 94.5 present:

“Stealing the Setlist: Indie Electro Portraits by Will Reichelt”
Friday 23rd July - Thursday 29th July 2010

All live shows are charged with surprises.

There’s the crowd pouncing on Nick Littlemore at a Pnau gig; Kirin J Callinan announcing he’ll be selling his DNA for 50c a pop at the merch stand; PVT filming the crowd with futuristic headsets; Julian from The Presets dancing with his gold-sparkle sneakers; Nathan from Faker falling backwards off a speaker stack; Spod racing through the Hopetoun Hotel, plastering loveheart Post-It notes on everyone in sight, only to slide to his knees as a final (floor-burning) statement.

All these moments have been sealed into a visual time vault by Sydney photographer Will Reichelt in his first solo show, “Stealing the Setlist”. Featuring all-Australian bands such as Cut Copy, Sherlock’s Daughter, Tame Impala, and Midnight Juggernauts, this exhibition captures acts in a livewire mood, whether it’s the sweaty, ever-shaking jitters of My Disco or the lost-in-the-moment grace of Bridezilla.

A fundraiser for Sydney community radio station, FBi 94.5FM, this show accordingly features snapshots of bands who have played gigs to support the station: Dappled Cities, Teenagersintokyo and Sarah Blasko.

In this exhibition, Will also moves his camera away from the photo pit, high-charged crowds and PA stacks, to capture musicians in other settings: Thomas Diakomichalis from City of Satellites in a spacesuit that accidentally ended up in Austria instead of Australia, Matt Blackman rehearsing with Palace of Fire at the iconic Bigjesusburger studio in Sydney, and Al Grigg from Red Riders in an Egg chair, taken with a slightly temperamental Polaroid from the 1970s.

Will first brought his camera to a gig in 2005 and since has captured crowds of 10 (to 20,000) at concerts around Sydney. His live music photography has featured in BRAG and The Vine, while other work has appeared in magazines (Time Out Sydney, Inside Out and Monocle), at art events (Creative Sydney, Australian Centre for Photography) and online (FBi's The Live Feed, Even Books, The Unbearable Lightness Of Being Hungry). Will’s background in film spills over into his camera-work, from assignments at Popcorn Taxi premieres and on-location shoots with Hollywood stars to the less glitzy reality of photographing cows in special-effects set-ups at Fox Studios.

“Stealing the Set List” runs from Friday 23rd July - Thurs 29th July 2010.

All works, including prints, catalogues and postcards, will be for sale with all profts going to FBi 94.5FM.
