In this new book, Arnold Van Puymbroeck: The First Eighty Years, historian David Baeckelandt chronicles Arnold’s life and tells the story of the Belgian community in Chicago up to the present time. He describes Arnold growing up in Vrasene, traveling to America in 1952, becoming a janitor in Chicago, and starting a family. The intertwined history of the janitors’ union and the Belgian-American Club of Chicago is well covered. The book shows how Arnold was either the organizer or the guiding light of the many activities of the Belgian community in Chicago: group visits to Belgium, archery, cycling, veterans marching, band playing, dancing, picnics, and others. The book is illustrated with many photographs and images of original documents. It is readable and we recommend it highly.
