Shhhh! You know who you are! Portraits taken over the last two years of an annual private event. The party was begun by an extended network of friends, brought together people from a variety of social backgrounds and has been ongoing for over 15 years. The ‘friendship’ culture is maintained – new guests have to be invited – and the location is carefully guarded. The festive atmosphere allows the relaxation of societal norms. Typically, partygoers exhibit a playful exuberance that subverts the constraints of mainstream identity politics.
I am a photographic artist working primarily as a portraitist and studying for a PhD. My particular area of interest is the transaction of the portrait - between photographer and sitter, and viewer and portrayed - and the representation of age and 'femininity'. Having worked in the creative industries as an actress and singer, I bring a 'theatrical' sensibility to my portraits, creating a moment of heightened appearance and loading images with a sense of the unseen psychic lives and character of my sitters.
