This book is not about myself. It is not about color. It is about capturing the moments and people that might otherwise be overlooked or forgotten. It is about letting you look into the real world rather than just look at it. It is about expressing what I feel about life and what is being photographed. It is about listening to photos that speak through silence.

About the Author

Ai Li Lim

I am an accountant by profession and has been quite an avid traveller. I only got serious about photography in 2005 when I first bought my digital SLR camera and became active on a photo sharing website. I particularly love taking black and white pictures in unconventional composition. Inspired and supported by my fellow photography friends, I started to use my camera as a form of discovery, expression and documentation.

I just received my book this morning. I have just immersed myself deeply into your vision and came out even more cleansed than I originally anticipated. You are a true artist.

The images speak so strongly. The sprinkling of great quotes are tasteful and well associated. While the faces are (mostly) candid they connect well to the viewer or in those planned instances they are perfectly disconnected.

Your spirit shines in your work. I think you must have a servant heart in that you are humble enough to gently follow just behind the scenes. That combines well with your observant soul that remains fully engaged to your surroundings and posed to force your trigger finger to push the button.

This is a collection I will treasure and share for the remainder of my journey. Thank you for sharing it and doing it in true Ai Li style!

I just received my copy of your book, and went through it four or five times. The more I look at your imagery and your presentation, the more I get out of it. You give me much to think about – it is certainly a prod to the imagination, and as you know, that’s what expression is all about.

You have organized the book very simply, and it flows very well. There is very little redundancy – you give the viewer a series of surprises in every section. The small format is as intimate as the images themselves – I think it is an elegant mesh of content and form.

As you know, I believe that abstraction, incongruity and human values are the most important principles behind communicative images. Your book offers us all three of those principles at every turn. You also really care about your subjects, and that comes through in every picture. And you use a variety of styles – photojournalism, concept illustration, fine art photography, to tell your stories and make your points. You also allow your images to express their ideas cumulatively as well as individually. The sum is greater than the parts, as it should be in an expressive photography book.
Bravo, indeed!
