the site of the northern state hospital farm has become one of my favorite places to go shoot photographs since moving to seattle three years ago.
having come for Britain where relics and history cant be helped but be stumbled over here in america we like to erase and forget it so seems to how we in fact treat our own history.
for better or worse i am just an observer.
and in decrepit disregard beauty is still there .

One of photography's paradoxes—one that challenges many of its optimistic histories—is how images remains persistent over time. While Thendara Kida Gee recognizes the intrinsic beauty of discarded property as historically relevant through today's perspective, she also captures a disturbing comprehension that the institution met its limits with the advent of early release and the assimilation of the mentally challenged (this commenter not withstanding). I had assumed that those limits were monetary, religious and political, but Gee shows how a "relic" still speaks of people who were never part of life as well. Her analysis of beauty found within decay and negligence proves that a change in maintenance does not equate to a change in the story of the structure. Contemporary photographers and historians alike should view Gee's photos---although a disappointingly short, twenty pages--- with a sense of renewed human perspective.
