Central Asia is no stranger to conflict. It has survived 4 major conquests: the Arabs in the 8th Century, the Mongols and Chinggis Khan in the 12th, Tamerlane in the 14th century and the Tsarist consolidation of Turkestan in the 19th Century. Most of the 20th century saw Soviet control of much of the region.
Yet as Fredrick Starrs "The Long View" (Hand/Eye Magazine 03 summer '10) The arts and the crafts of the region are thriving in the 21st Century. Why? The tradition of creativity and trade along the old Silk Road is an important factor. So is the diverse 's tough determination to survive andd thrive often accomplished with infinite effort and a sense of beauty.

About the Author

Edward Addeo
edwardaddeo New York

I began my career with a fusion of 2 interests:
photography and color.
While attending The School of Visual Arts as a Photography Fine Art Major I interned at the Design & Decoration building in NYC with a colorist.

My passion for photography and color
led to a series of interior photographs that would become my BFA thesis.
These images led to assignments with The New York Times Magazine, House & Garden, Vogue Living Section and Avenue.
Through the years my fascination for atmospheric interiors, color, and photography has grown.
I have 5 books to my credit by major book publishers:
Bullfinch Press, Clarkson Potter, Gibbs Smith and Viking Press.
