Small Dreams - Trailer Parks in Palm Springs is a photographic project consisting of large, highly detailed color prints, that document the architecture of the Palm Springs Trailer parks, such as Sahara and Blue Sky. The series presents a typology of the various homes that evolved in Palm Springs after WWII. Early models were made using surplus sheet metal and over the years people would add on, remodel, and create mini gardens and decorative statements. Shot from the same straightforward angle, each exterior façade photograph reflects on the nuanced details and expressive personalized touches of their inhabitants.
Patricia McDonnell, Director of the Ulrich Museum of Art, where Milstein recently had a show, notes: “Milstein … follows a respected photographic tradition emphasizing typology and dissecting nuanced difference from numbing sameness. Such noted photographers as August Sanders, Hilla and Bernd Becher, Andreas Gursky, Lynn Cohen, and now Milstein comprise this tradition.”
