About the Book
This is the story of how we realized our dream and travelled across continents on two motorcycles for a year
The two of us always had the travel bug. Even before getting married just two years ago, we talked about taking some time off to travel and combine it with our passion, motorcycle riding. After a year of planning, we departed from Washington, DC to live out our dream. We embarked on two motorcycles traveling the American continents from north to south. This book tells the story of our odyssey that literally took us from the Arctic Circle in Alaska to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia in Argentina.
We saw amazing places like the vast wilderness of Alaska, where you can ride for hours through the forest without any sign of civilization. Alaskan wildlife was spectacular. There were so many salmon that you could just walk on them and close encounters with black and grizzly bears were not uncommon. Driving south, we visited some of the most amazing National Parks in the world.
Upon entering Mexico, our first steps in Latin America, we experienced a tremendous change of topography: giant cacti in the desert, pristine beaches, Mayan ruins in the jungle and colorful cities. The best part was the local food, so flavorful but sometimes adventurous with strange menu items such as eye tacos and fried grasshoppers. We had other new challenges to face in Central America including complicated border crossings and corrupt cops. Things got easier though after we took a crash course in Spanish in Guatemala.
Finally, we entered South America via a sailboat arriving in Cartagena, Colombia. A different world opened up to us with the snowcapped Andes, the huge desert in Peru and Bolivia's seemingly endless salt flat. We had to deal with a few health issues like a mysterious allergy and jungle worms living under our skin. But we survived and made our final descent through Argentina with its vibrant canyons, wine country and immense Patagonia to finally reach Tierra del Fuego, the end of the world.
It was an entire year riding motorcycles, discovering different cultures, tasting exotic foods, making magical encounters and having unique experiences. An adventure of a lifetime...
