About the Book
Founded in 1994 by a gang of graduates unable to face the reality of getting a proper job, Next Best Thing Productions has striven to produce "the next best thing" to professional quality classical theatre. From its earliest beginnings in Norwich the company has moved and grown, culiminating in a critically-acclaimed production of "Hedda Gabler" in Sheffield in 2008.
Artistic Director Will Bird, with the assistance of Richard Jones and other cast members, has compiled a complete history of the company, covering a dozen plays and nearly fifteen years of playmaking. With over a hundred previously unpublished photographs it's a tribute to the scores of talented individuals who helped make this unique theatrical endeavour a reality.

Born in Bristol some years ago I attended the University of East Anglia where I first got my taste for theatre. The first play I directed was Shakespeare's "All's Well That Ends Well" and I went on to set up my own theatre company, Next Best Thing Productions. From 2004 the company was been based in Sheffield, tackling plays by Gogol, Moliere and Shakespeare. In 2011 I graduated with an MA in Theatre Directing from the University of East London and will be premiering 2 new plays in London in 2012: "Waiting" by Lucy Sheen and "Queen For a Day" by Hayley Atkinson.
