"The La Finca project, a collaborative effort between The Bridge in Charlottesville, Virginia and the Albemarle County Public Schools, connects high-school students from the Southwood Mobile Home Park with area writers, artists, and educators. The students worked one-on-one with volunteers to develop their photographic technique and creative writing skills, then taken by bus to Maple Hill Farm in Scottsville, home of the Local Food Hub.
Most of the students had no personal experience with agriculture, and understood their visit to the farm in two ways simultaneously: it was both a subject for photographs and writing, and a place to learn more about the connections between land, food, and community. Their energy and enthusiasm for the work shows clearly in this book's images and writings; one gets a clear sense, paging through, that these young artists are experienced enough to be competent in their medium, but green enough that new subject matter is immediately and automatically an end and purpose in itself. There's a joy of rendition in each of the details that have captured their imagination."
