Herman Grows Up! is based on a true story of a young Green Heron who adjusts to life on his own after his brother leaves and is illustrated using actual photos taken of this young bird. This is a sequel to Herman The Heron, which is a story told by Herman, a young Green Heron, about a week when he and his brother Tom adjusted to their new life after they had happened out of the huge maple tree where their nest was located. Herman Grows Up! recaps the week Herman and Tom spent together adapting to their new life and follows Herman's life over the next month until he has grown up and learned to fly, so that now he was ready to see the world!
I am married to David Parson and am a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, where I taught Social Studies at Parkview High School for 32 years. After I retired in 2002, I have enjoyed developing my interests in birdwatching and photographing those birds which visit our yard. In 2008 I had the great experience of observing two young Green Herons for a week and one of them for a month. I took well over 400 photos during that time and got some really good shots which was one of the motivations for writing this book to share those photos. Since then I have taken hundreds of other photos of a great variety of birds that have entertained me.
