The purpose of these photographs is to capture the people of
Punjab in their daily environment. Where possible I established
a rapport with my human subjects before taking photographs
which was rewarding in terms of better understanding of their
apprehensiveness, belief, culture, religion and feelings in a country
like Pakistan which is very sensitive to photography on religious
grounds, particularly so when photographing women.
These images capture the synthesis of factual detail and emotion,
communicating an understanding and reality which transcend the
usual boundaries of society and culture. Engaging so closely with
my subjects and listening to their personal stories was, at times,
emotionally draining. In fact, this project broadened my outlook to
life in general but more particularly to photography of people during
travel. Each picture has a story behind it, which I would not have
known had I not spoken with my subjects.
