OF SHIPS & LIGHT
A Photographic Essay of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and Hyde Street Pier, San Francisco, California
by Justyn Zolli, Photographer; with a forward by Brendan Wilson, Historian
OF SHIPS AND LIGHT is a visual tour of one of the most unique National Parks in our country, the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in San Francisco California. This historical park is composed of many elements: a world class collection of ship models, thousands of maritime artifacts, artworks and paintings, a WPA-era Museum Building, an educational Visitor Center, a protected beach, and an extensive library and archive of maritime documents and literature. But perhaps the element that conjures the imagination most is the collection of sailing vessels, small boat-craft, and steam-powered ships that permanently reside along the Hyde Street Pier at the watery end of Fisherman’s Wharf. This collection of artful photographs displays just a hint of the beauty, mystery, and history that is found in this park, a history kept alive for our benefit on a daily basis by the hard work of the many specialty craftsmen, shipwrights, riggers, docents, rangers, curators, conservators, historians, administrators and volunteers that work there.
