About the Book
Steel Wheels 1986 - 1997 covers graffiti on the subway system of New York City during its final years of existance: 1986 - 1989. Followed by the earliest stages of aerosol graffiti on North American freight trains. What sets Steel Wheels apart from many other books on the subject is it is completely unbiased. None of the photos were solicited or aquired. Full of insightful text and brilliant, rare photographs Steel Wheels captures this 11 year span and gives validity to this period as one of the most important periods in the history of graffiti on trains in America. It is between these years that Writing in New York City began to reach outside of its boarders and spread to the world. All photographs were shot, in transit, by the author Cole T. Only. 120 pages.
