I wanted to share with you some of my experiences, living abroad, since leaving London and the UK. For practical reasons it soon became obvious that it was necessary to reduce the choice and so I decided to select only pictures of my newly adopted city of Paris. Though still a newcomer I would like to think that I have already managed to capture some aspects of the city that are uniquely personal to me, as well as put my own perspective on some of the more popular attractions. This can most clearly be seen in the photographs at the beginning of the book, taken in and around the area of Montmartre, in the 18th arrondissement, near where we live.
Such a lot has happened in such a short time, but these twenty pages represent a large slice of the pie. Almost every picture has a little personal story behind it, a story that I can relay to you next time we meet, and which, before that, you can perhaps imagine for yourself…

About the Author

Richard Brooks
rabrooks Paris
Richard is a painter who happens to use the camera as a tool, much as he would a pen or pencil. But there is more to his photographs than simply sketching. Look closer and you may find a theme or a sensibility that permeates his pictures. Some people have described it as a kind of 'stillness', Richard prefers to think of it as a type of melancholy. That melancholy, he argues, is a parallel part of the process of Hermetic philosphy - a western belief system that is both moderate and flexible. From this perspective melancholy can thus be the source of inspired creative achievement.
