I Am an Emoticon was inspired by a line written by Amanda Fortini in Salon: In the age of Facebook, “Epic emotions are reduced to emoticons.”

To "become" an emoticon, Strawberry Saroyan poses as sixteen emoticons that she is provided by her email carrier.

Each photograph is labeled, and they are ordered to match the book’s final page, an “emoticon key.”
