About the Book
Artist book: 122 pages, 8 x10 inch (25 x 20 cm) / The process of re-photographing those photographs that can be found on Italian graveyards is evoking sensations of memory and loss; intensified through the signs of disparition and decay inscribed in the images by the passage of time that could be read as a purely nostalgic journey through Italian cemeteries; with additional layers added by the inclusion and combination of four different places: an Epoche gone by (Venice)/ the Pompejianic (Naples) / the Archaic (Sardinia) and finally the void (Le Catacombe dei Capuzzini in Sicily).
Yet the project is aiming at sth. deeper and higher at the same time: foremost, these portraits are about energies i.e. different states of energy levels (in the archaic Sardegna section there can be seen arguably portraits of God all Mighty, his son Jesus and the Devil, the seducer). With the focus on the scratched surfaces, it is about the thin membrane that separates us from the other side and that one almost means to touch, a thought that is emphasized by the layout of the book that juxtaposes each image with a monochromatic page, suggesting individual colours of the soul. While it's just the body's empty shell that has been left behind (Palermo), the portraits seem to belong to spirits that have decided to move on.
MORTO IN ITALIA was realized in four stages in 2006/2007

please note: my books are subject to constant subtle changes - leading to a string of replaced uploads - which is especially true in the early stages - since PoD technology offers this new reality - creating the likelihood that some shortlived in-between-state-of the-art may produce rare collector items - if purchased at any such given moment. It may be advisable to flip through the volumes here and then again - i.e. there will be parallel editions to choose from in some cases. bvh
