About the Book
The Beauty and Tragedy of Decline
This series is about the evolution of a once booming industrial state that has been overcome by ruins. All of these photographs are taken in Ohio and capture the essence of what once was. There is beauty in the forgotten. There is beauty in the detail, the shapes, the color, and the patina of age. Ohio boomed in population during the late 19th and early 20th century due to the emergence of the rubber and steel production, but since the 1960’s has declined greatly due to the disappearance of the heavy manufacturing industry. These pictures capture what is left: images of prisons, pottery industries, restaurants, inns, car manufacturing factories, cement plants, brick works, train yards, entertainment venues, and a coast guard station. Places that were once at the heart of a thriving economic epicenter and have been neglected for decades, have withered away. These images capture the exquisite details of structures that have disintegrated. I have captured both the dignity and tragedy of Ohio’s decline.
