This book is a hard copy of my on-line course, that can be taken here:

We begin with the fundamentals of digital photography ... the ground work, and work up. From there you will be able to explore and understand what it is you are doing, and why. You will come to learn that snapshots are just that, snapshots. With a little vision and composition, the right software and an understanding of it, you will learn to make photographs. I want you to be able to predict, create, and control what you want the photograph to look like, and then take that information from the camera, manipulate it, and print it to make a photograph and not just another snapshot.

To do this, you will learn about the bits and bytes of digital, resolution, capturing bit depth, dimension, grayscale and how this controls colors. But first, we will start with some math, so that you understand not only what is going into the camera and why, but also what is going to come out of it, namely the printer.
