In December 2010, I bought my first Holga camera. I wanted to explore the creative possibilities of a medium format "toy" camera known for showing unique light leaks, blurred images due to slower shutter speeds, and inherent vignetting. I was also curious and excited to experience the surprise of not knowing what I had captured until the film was developed. The first Holga project I gave myself was to collect images of my upcoming trip to the Mexican Riviera. I had no particular theme in mind going into the project as I had never been to the western coast of Mexico before and did not know what I would discover there.
The resulting fourteen photographs contained in this book were taken during excursions in three coastal towns: the tiny tourist haven of Cabo San Lucas, the charming city of Mazatlán, and Sayulita - a small fishing and surfing village about one hour north of Puerto Vallarta. What I found were various images of ocean and city, both organic and structural, that captured dreaming essences of the particular place. In some way, each image is about simplicity and/or beauty whether it be the shoreline on an isolated beach, an single line of private school students walking through a bustling city street, a lone palm tree against a white wall, or a grotesque and yet beautiful pile of pig heads in the local mercado. In this simplicity and beauty, I experience the dreaming essence of la Riviera Mexicana.
