About the Book
Bill Muirhead came from rural Illinois to the Lake Atitlán region in 2004 with a keen interest in the daily lives, labor, farming practices, and customs of the Maya who live there. His photos record the lives of Lake Atitlán residents from virtually every town in the surrounding area. This book presents over six years of cultural research − selected photos and text, which explore eight important themes of Mayan culture lakeside: Lake Atitlán; People; Washing and Weaving; Mother and Child; Coffee Harvest; Onion Harvest; Market Day; and Custom, Color and Ceremony.
Bill Muirhead (b. 1951) was born outside of Chicago and lives in Guatemala. He has exhibited his photographs around the Lake Atitlán region and Florence, Italy. He has a degree in Latin American history and has been published in articles about the culture of breastfeeding in Guatemala for La Leche League International's magazine Breast-feeding Today. His book, The Lords of Atitán: A Tribute to the Maya, has just been released. For more information, see www.lordsofatitlan.com.
