About the Book
Norwich has more medieval parish churches than any other city in the country. Whilst these beautiful churches-as-buildings have been much photographed, the churches-as-people have not. David White, a Norwich-based scientist and photographer, spent fifteen months photographing these communities. To obtain this record, he attended several services in each church, talking to the clergy and the congregations, and photographing services and other activities. The photography was undertaken in full knowledge, consent and welcome of the clergy and their congregations, and gives a fascinating insight into how today’s Church of England congregations express their faith within buildings built before the Reformation. The buildings themselves have been rebuilt and refurbished over the centuries, at different times and in different ways – Georgian, Victorian, modern. This photographic essay is about both the relationship of the people with their churches and the diversity of Anglicanism in one small city centre in which the breadth of the Church of England is found, from the Evangelical to Anglo-Catholic
