There are nearly a million people living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda today, and 1.2 million children orphaned by the disease. This photo essay is a testament to the struggles, dignity—and joy—in the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS, the families that care for
them, and the families that have been left behind.

Jenna Mulhall Brereton is a photographer, writer, and international development professional living near Philadelphia. The photographs in this essay were taken in Uganda in 2005 while Jenna was participating in a Maine Media Workshops master class in Kampala and Rakai. There, she photographed the work of community-based and international organizations that address the needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS.
