NINETEENTH CENTURY naturalist Antonio Raimondi once observed that Peru is like “a beggar sitting on a golden bench”. More than a century has passed, and Peru remains a country of heartbreaking contrasts and strange contradictions. The following images have been selected to depict a place that is both beautiful and troubled; and to share something of the lives of two Canadian missionaries in-the-field.
