For over two years, Levi traveled to twenty-four counties and photographed 19th and early 20th century schoolhouses, including several that predate Virginia’s public school system! This collection includes more than seventy original color photographs of well-preserved and renovated schoolhouses as well as schools that have fallen into disrepair. More so, the photographs and companion notes document the work of individuals, communities, and organizations to educate the Commonwealth’s children-those who lived beyond the state’s urban centers.

This book brings to all of our attention history, quietly sitting among us, that for the most part had been forgotten. These beautiful little schoolhouses that such a short time ago were so important to the lives of many people, are still there for us to see if we so desire. Thanks for making us aware!!
