About the Book
People of the 99 documents the individuals who ride the 99 bus from downtown Providence to Pawtucket, Rhode Island. I began this project when I moved to Providence three years ago to attend RISD and started taking the 99 to get around. By the beginning of my senior year, I became very comfortable with this bus line and felt like I was part of the community that relied heavily on the 99. I would often see familiar faces riding on and waiting for the bus. After realizing this connection between a community of bus riders, I began to document the wide range of people at bus stops all over Providence. After starting this project and talking with the people I was photographing all over the city, I realized that studying the people I interact with everyday on my bus line was more interesting and meaningful than trying to examine everyone at once. Also, the people of the 99 were a relatively small population that had never been documented prior. By making these portraits, I was insuring that others would in fact see the people of the 99...
...The people of the 99 exists far beyond this book. Although not every rider is physically represented in these pages, they are part of the collective body of riders simply because as people of the 99 our community makes our memory, in a way, one.
