From the Introduction:
On the surface this book is about homelessness.
Every person in this book is or has been homeless. Unfortunately, photographing the homeless has been done to the point of cliché and here is another book of photographs of the homeless.
Troubled childhoods, addictions, poor decisions. All of those things jump into the minds of many when they think of the homeless.
What interested me most was who these people were outside of that frame and especially their similarities to those of us with families, jobs, and homes. Who were they now? How were they surviving? What was it that allowed them to keep going?
This book is also about searching. For some that is looking for a place to stay, for food to eat, for a friend. More than anything though it is about family. Not having one. Losing one. Making one.
On the inside this book is a family album.
