I have illustrated Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" using texture and colour. I have attempted to marry together process and subject matter, placing together juxtaposing imagery to reinstate the characters mental state. I want the reader to feel uncomfortable looking at certain sections of my book to represent how Esther feels. I have attempted to texturise the various emotions that Esther feels throughout the novel; the angst, depression, paranoia all aroused i believe through her fear of sex, this inhibiting her becoming a woman. The caos of the quotes is to reflect Esthers thought process, the jumbled rhythm and journey, confusion and paranoia, it is also to allow a breather from the imagery.
All of the images in the book are photographs from surfaces I have made from various materials; latex, metals, plastics, canvas with mixed media using clay, wax, wood, sand, soil combined with chalk, charcoal and acrylic. each of the images constructed to represent a specific emotion. These 3d structures i have photographed in studio space with good lighting and then brought into photoshop to enhance colour further and to intrigate the images amongst one another through colour and scale for the book.
my book is a personal response to the novel the bell jar, it is a diary like entry of Esther's personal thoughts projected through colour and texture in an abstract form.
