As I write this text, in several countries in northern Africa and some southern European countries such as Spain, a revolution is happening.
A social revolution (I refer more specifically to Spain) in which the people have decided that enough is enough; enough of anti-social policies, corrupt politicians, a ‘democratic system’ closer to perfect tyranny than fair democracy.
At Completely Naked we wanted to explore specifically this issue and for this reason we chose an ‘urban spectacle’ as our focus of work.
The setting is South London, The Elephant & Castle, in one of the social Europe's largest social housing estates, The Heygate Estate. Once home to more than 1200 working class families, it is now undergoing demolition marked for 2015, with the aim of building another more luxurious location for those of different economic status.
The process has been slow and contentious. The few people who still resist the pressures of the council, commented that the standard of living in Heygate was always dignified and there was much more of a sense of community, now lost because neighbors have been relocated to different areas of the borough or they have had to leave Central London altogether, now it’s no longer affordable to low income families.
The reality is that since 2008, this housing estate has been near empty, creating
an atmosphere akin to that of Andrei Tarkovskiy’s 'Stalker'. An energy turbine, installed on top of one of the buildings, turns, never stopping, producing just enough energy to power one small kitchen unit in this monstrous complex. The machine has an official name: QR5 (Quiet Revolution 5).
We decided to use this utopian failure as a metaphor; it would be our starting point to show human bodies as only Completely Naked knows how, to demonstrate the endless spinning cycle in which we, humankind, have been caught.
Completely Naked made a public call for a free and peaceful action where participants could express their emotions and create a dialogue with the urban context to which we refer.
The results are shown at http://www.completelynaked.co.uk/action0007.html
