About the Book
Captain David L. Stokes worked in the marine industry for more than 43 years. Starting as a deckhand aboard a towboat in 1955, he was soon promoted to mate, engineer, then pilot. In 1960, before his 22nd birthday, David became one of the youngest captains on the river. In 1985, he started his own company, Stokes Towing Company, Inc., employing as many as 150 people. His company moved all types of dry and liquid cargo from New Orleans to Pittsburgh, Chicago, and cities in between. This 8 X 10 book, containing 146 images and photos, tells about David's early years (growing up on a farm near Glen Allan, Mississippi) and his first trip aboard a towboat. God's protection was evident in his life when he was hit with 7,620 volts of electricity when moving a TV antenna, and when he suffered hypothermia after his boat sank on the Ohio River.
