The portraits contained within these pages were taken, among others, during a journey around the Papua New Guinea Highlands and Islands. The people I met along the way were friendly and open, inviting me into their villages and eagerly smiling for my pictures. I hope this small selection of images conveys the vivid colours and pride of this traditional culture.
This trip and my interactions with the local people touched me in a lasting way, and I was pleased to be able to leave something behind by carrying an instant camera to offer family portraits for the villagers to keep. The smile on a mother’s face and the amazement on a child’s, as their first-ever family portrait slowly developed on the film in their hands, was fantastic. It was out of this experience that the non-profit organisation Portrait Equality was started. Please visit us at www.portraitequality.org
