The wasp nest was pilaged by a spider who hid in the lip of the nest for several days, feeding secretly on the eggs when the wasp was away.
I believe the wasp discovered the thief and they fought, breaking the nest.
The wasp cleaned up the debris, but never rebuilt the honeycomb structure and the nest was eventually abandoned.
