In early 2011, Jimmy Edmonds’ son was killed in a road accident while traveling in SE Asia. From personal tragedy he has created a moving and insightful book that reflects the way we use photographs in the process of mourning. It is also an exploration of the nature of photography itself. The “chaos of meaning" that Edmonds discovers lying at the heart of photography, mirrors almost exactly his own confusion surrounding the death of his son.
Rarely have photography and poetry come together with such force.
Jimmy Edmonds was born in East Sussex, England in 1950. He is a full time documentary film editor and a part time photographer. The films he has worked on have won acclaim and a number of awards, including a BAFTA in 2009 for Chosen (Channel Four True Stories), an expose of child abuse in an English boarding school. His own film “Breaking the Silence”, also on child abuse, was aired on the BBC in 2006. The “ash clouds” were first shown as part of the Lorca in England festival in Stroud, Gloucestershire where Edmonds now lives with his wife Jane and daughter Rosa.
