The scenes in this book are small moments, as people go about their lives in the subway, in the parks, and in the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan. These images capture the feeling and appreciation of being alive through human interactions, quiet gestures, and simple pleasures as part of daily routines.

This book is a culmination of 3 trips in 2008, 2010, and 2011 to New York City to create images of people in their everyday lives. There are scenes from Bryant Park, Prospect Park, Canal Street, the F line, Cobble Hill, Chelsea, and other locales. All of these locations provided fascinating people as the subject matter for this project.

I am a photographer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. My goal is to show people as they are, just being themselves, relating to each other or their environment. "The poetry of human encounters on the street" is how one writer put it when discussing a theme of Henri Cartier-Bresson's work. That is a beautiful description and one that serves as my inspiration.

Life is full of discovery and I try to make that happen with my camera.

“New York City Moments: Everyday Life in the Subway, Parks and Streets,”
by Paul Matzner.

New York City Moments

What is the essence of New York? That fabulous Manhattan skyline? The hustle and glare of Times Square? The stateliness of the Statue of Liberty? While New York is many things to many people, at its core, of course, NYC is all about its people…probably the most diverse cast of characters of any American city, and a lot of them! Milwaukee photographer Paul Matzner channels his inner Elliot Erwitt (Gary Winogrand? Robert Frank?) in capturing these 103 images that effectively remind viewers that they’re not in Kansas (or Milwaukee!) anymore. These are slices of life that capture the variety, occasional mundaneness and frequent wackiness of the Big Apple’s inhabitants. Yes, they are different than the rest of us, and Paul Matzner has assembled a refreshing photographic glance at their world.

One Milwaukee gallery owner who previewed the book last week had this to say:

“This looks fantastic. I know how much work goes into the sorting and editing of images, and then the selection process, etc. You really found a great way to organize this material. The images are beautiful. Congrats.”
