Ewen Bell has followed the plight of elephants in Asia for a decade, and in the misty forests of Thailand's Golden Triangle he discovers that old mahouts can learn new tricks. Without timber for the elephants to harvest these mahouts and their families find a new future in the Golden Triangle Elephant Camp. This series of photographs documents the new style of respect being cultivated between beast and man, and asks whether these
beautiful animals can ever be truly free.

Conservation is never just black and white.

This book was prepared to accompany the first exhibition of The Elephant Camp, as part of the 2011 Ballarat International Foto Bienalle. The exhibition won the Fringe Prize.
