About the Book
The Other Side
I have been a member of this church since the very beginning. My parents helped pay for the first month’s rent when it was just an old classroom in what was formerly Serramonte Del Rey High School. Since then, I have been there when we moved to different buildings, when we added more members, and even when we lost a few members. In essence, I have come to call this church my second family. We have all grown together throughout the thirteen or so years of the church’s history. Yet in those thirteen years, I never bothered to really understand their lives. I see them once a week, or occasionally at some gathering outside of church, but I never take the time to really see who they are, or what their life is like outside of church.
This project gave me that chance. I spent some moments with a few of them at church, after church, while they were working, at home, running errands, or on their lunch break. They allowed me to enter their lives, and invade their privacy. What I found was that they were not much different inside the church as they were outside. It supported the notion that these people really are my second family.
