About the Book
On Photopainting:
We are used to thinking of photography as the art that records reality. However, along with traditional press photography, alternative types of photography, such as pictorialism, cyanotype, monocle, and pinhole, have been evolving over decades. Those operate at the junction of many arts, including photography, drawing, collage and painting. The extent and technique of their interference with the photo image may vary.
At the turn of the centuries, St Petersburg-based artist Asya Nemchenok introduced a new experimental technique she named "photopainting". It combines some techniques of monotyping, drawing and painting while dealing with black-and-white or colour negative film. The works made in the photopainting technique are distinguished for their striking and rich imagery. It is no longer mere photography but a common child of various arts. The colour and drawing applied to the photo, the ‘chemical’ interplay between paints and film emulsions multiplied by the artist’s creative energy give birth to unique works that cannot be reproduced. This technique requires special artistic skills as the image size is only 35 mm and colours invert in printing. In her last series, Asya Nemchenok extends her experiments by making colour adjustments and applying textures during manual printing. Eventually, photo image turns into sophisticated drawing.
Always grounded in the personal experience, Nemchenok’s innovative works are sincere, sometimes almost intimate, artistic perceptions that disclose new layers and senses of reality.

About the Creator
In art photography I need the experiment and free creative improvisation based on reality. I need art opportunities based in combining picturesque colour gamma and precise compositional solution. Usually I prefer hand work with negative and positive to computer proccessing of photos. And my favourite technique – is a experimental author “photopainting”.
