I wrote this book for a child I was sponsoring in India. He had asked me to write him a story and told me he loved goats.
At the time, I was doing some volunteer photo work for Horseworld in Bristol. It was there, I met Nebula, a black Nubian goat who was lovely.
She was very affectionate and was perfect for my story. Since she was named Nebula, I decided to give the story an astronomical theme.
I enlisted the help of my friend, Linda DeGarmo, who worked with me at Borders bookshop, to do the illustrations.
Once the layout, story and illustrations were completed, I received some help from my friend, Meryl Nelson who scanned the book onto her computer. From there, it went to a local print shop where 25 copies were printed at my own expense.
I had one copy sent to my sponsored child in India where it was translated to Bengali for him.
I received a letter and photo from him holding the book and smiling brightly.
From there, I decided to take the book to local schools in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It was well received by both students and teachers. I donated a few copies to the schools libraries. I also did a reading at Borders Bookshop and sold a few copies. This was a labour of love because I want children to enjoy reading. Books are after all, the cornerstone to a good education and a bright future.
