This is a story of the physical, intellectual and spiritual development of a young English naturalist, Sidney Harold Hammond, the marriage to his Nicaraguan wife, Florita del Carmen Marin, his record of the natural life of Nicaragua, and his commentary on the period of Nicaraguan ‘development’—political, social, and economic—from 1901 to 1923, as recorded in his personal diaries and letters.

This is a treasure trove. Splendid writing from the original diaries, sensitive and acute observation, fascinating territory and enterprise, enticing relationships. The story of and in the book and that around the book are engrossing. The writer's own command of the material is superb. A magnificent accomplishment , a dream come true.
