About the Book
The term “Cracker” refers to the early American pioneers that settled in the state of Florida. The first “Crackers” settled in the state around 1763 when Spain traded Florida to Great Britain. These pioneers lived off of the land by establishing their ranches and farms in the Floridian wilderness. They received their name from the sounds of their profession. “Crackers” or “cracker cowboys” herded and captured cattle, using dogs and bullwhips. The cracking sound of the bullwhips became the source of their title.
While the days of the original “Crackers” have long since passed, modern day “Crackers” have decided to embrace the frontier lifestyle by choosing to live without modern day conveniences. Like their historic predecessors, they have become self-sufficient by growing their own vegetables, raising their own meat, hunting and building their own houses. The following photographs are intended to offer a glimpse into the historic lifestyle of these modern day pioneers. (20 page book)
