About the Book
How did this book come to pass? On the morning after our son Alexander’s birth with mother and baby in hospital for an unknown period, I was waiting for the older children to get ready to go and greet their newborn brother, I picked up a camera and shot a photo of grapes on the vine in our garden. In that fraction of a second I decided to shoot an image for every day of Alexander’s first year, at that point I was not convinced that he would make it through. This proved to be the start of an odyssey lasting 5 years and counting. So this project got underway one day at a time, then on the 29th August, a month on from the birth I thought I’d change for the day from colour to black and white to mark out each month and because I’ve always loved monochrome. Well a year was reached and for certain reasons I decided to carry on with the dailies I eventually stopped that after 1002 days but I persisted with the monthly monochromes and they became their own project. This portfolio comes from the warp and weft of my and Alexander’s life and were pretty well spontaneous or only planned on the day. Occasionally I got to go more than a few miles from home or set up some kind of image but in general they are of what was in front of me, thus a celebration of the ordinary. The title came from a line in an old David Bowie song ‘Five Years’ I tip my hat to you, Mr Bowie. Big thanks are due to David Jury and indeed all the staff of The Minories (a part of Colchester Institute) where I did an MA in Book Art and Design led by David, The course gave me the space and time to put this book together.
All the profit from this book will go directly to Colchester University Hospital’s neo-natal unit which is where Alexander spent his first 10 days. I can hardly praise the staff of this unit highly enough, they were unfailingly cheerful, calm and reassuring to naturally worried parents. So this book is a symbol of my and our gratitude to them. Our baby is now a mischievous schoolboy who loves soccer and Dr Who and I’ve gone through a few changes of my own too!
