The “Back in the World” portrait project evolved out of Wisconsin Public Television’s Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories documentary. The project offered a unique opportunity to create a portrait of the men and women who had served in that conflict. Because of the political upheaval during the period these veterans served, they were never rewarded with the welcome home that those who served during previous conflicts received. While nothing could ever replace that simple honor, we hope that Wisconsin Public Television’s Vietnam War Stories project served as a starting point for that welcome home. This is a non-profit book.

It took more than 30 years before anyone would allow me talk at length about Vietnam. So when I began writing of my time there, I was surprised at my near perfect recall of operations and personnel. It seems I am not the only one, but we are better men for having lived it.
