As someone born and raised in Montana, I have seen very little of the state despite living here my entire life. Rather than traveling and photographing the sites typically associated with Montana, such as Yellowstone or the numerous, yet awe-inspiring, mountain ranges, I became interested in seeking out the places most overlooked by travelers. This series of photographs provides a glimpse of southern Montana and its diverse landscapes and rural towns. Focusing on towns of under, or near, a population of one-thousand residents, this project is a documentation of Montana’s rural living spaces and their quirky and charming features that make them unique. Although not an all-encompassing document of Montana’s more quiet settlements, the photographs are an outsider’s perspective on these towns that reveal the subtle, or not so subtle, similarities and differences between Montana’s small town infrastructure, architecture, and culture.
