“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” - Albert Einstein

I found myself in a hopeless place that contained only the most fleeting moments of joy. Regardless of all the incredible things in my life...my son Adam, family, friends, good health, regular charity work, and a penchant for adventure...my lows were constant. When it got to the point where I would actually seek out ways to damage myself to maintain those lows, I knew something had to change. I couldn't maintain that cycle and survive.

With the help and encouragement of my friends, I started a month long gratitude practice. Every day I found 3 things to be grateful for. Each one had to be unique and heartfelt. The goal of a gratitude practice was something I desperately needed: To remind oneself of the great things in life, be they small or large, and that we do indeed have something to live for. At that point in time, I wasn't sure that was the case.

As part of my practice I also decided to try re-kindle my love for photography. It had been a passion of mine for well over half my life, but my cameras were laying unused. The ability to see the beautiful little details in every day things had vanished along with hope and joy. That made me wonder if the three were linked.

Photography. Hope. Joy.

Not everyone will find their salvation the way I do. It is my hope, yes, hope, that anyone who reads this book will try to find their own in whatever way they can. Should you already have that in your life, then go find more! I don't think it's possible to have too much joy, too much hope, in your life. If you don't have enough, or any, then go find it. I promise you that there is plenty of both to be had. Sometimes all it takes is looking at the clouds during a sunset or hearing the laughter of someone you love to realize it's been there all along, waiting for you. Look for them every day, be grateful, and blossom.
